Meet our 1st Graduate - Thapelo Chalatsi (Chaps)

Raised by his unemployed single mother and the youngest of four siblings, Chaps matriculated from Jiyana Senior Secondary School in Tembisa in 2010. Chaps achieved distinctions in Physical Science, Mathematics, and Life Orientation and excelled in drama and chess. Despite his intellectual ability that suggested a bright future, his family was unable to meet the financial obligations tertiary education would force on them.

With financial support from the Tiger Brands Ikusasa Lami Program, a project that identifies and support young talent to meet skills shortages, Chaps was able to register at the University of Pretoria and commenced with a BSc Chemistry degree. He was still reliant on the financial support from friends and former educators to meet day to day costs whilst applying for bursaries. Brian and Caron Mosehla heard about his challenging circumstances and after an in-depth interview agreed to finance his studies.

Chaps completed his Honours degree in 2014 and is currently enrolled in a Graduate Trainee Program and he plans to enrol for a Master’s Degree in Business Administration soon.

2020 update on Thapelo Chalatsi (Chaps)

Chaps completed the Graduate program in 2016, worked in the Quality department at Tiger Brands, and became the first Go to Market Quality Specialist for Tiger Brands. While working at Tiger Brands he registered Square 15 Trading and Projects, a Cleaning and Maintenance company operating across Gauteng.

In 2018 be became a full time Director of Square 15. The company qualified to be in the Property Point and Fortress Enterprise Supplier Development program. Since then the company has been providing cleaning and maintenance services to big companies in the residential, commercial, construction and manufacturing industry. The company recently employed 53 temporary employees.

Taking advantage of his manufacturing experience as well as his chemistry experience, Chaps is also running Venus Meets Mars, a cosmetics company producing Skin care, hair care and make-up products. He has partnered with the Small Enterprise Development Agency (SEDA) as well as Chemin in the development and testing of his products. These products are expected to be in the market in 2020.

Chaps still continues to give back to the community through tutoring & mentorship, and cleaning and disinfection of schools and churches during the Corona Virus Pandemic.
